City, State and Federal Licensure
With your cert and association membership, in many cities and states, you can begin work immediately with no further licensing needed. Some states require additional exams or post certification, but in most you can begin work immediately as you start the certification process. In some, you will have to wait, but if you are creative, you can get around this with incorporation, partnering, working under a government contract/ LE dept., or attorney, and many other exceptions, to get started immediately.
Some cities require business licenses, which usually just means getting your State tax ID (usually free or a small fee), and using that and your PSU cert or association ID to be approved. Some require an EIN, which is a free tax ID from the IRS.
As an example, our locksmiths, gunsmiths, reloaders, bodyguard instructors and bladesmiths follow a process of getting their PSU cert, then their association or PSU ID, then bonding, then tools, then wholesaler recognition, badge, trade references, insurance, incorporation or LLC, etc. These all add together to make you a viable business and recognized for any further certification your state requires.
The FFL process, if you are in that program, requires a separate application, and the FFL Answers site has info on that process.
